TOUR DESCRIPTION
Cod fishing is a long-standing tradition in Northern Norway, and has ever since the Stone Age been an important source of food for the locals. You’ll find petroglyphs in Tromsø that’s over 10 000 years old and contains painting of fishermen, fishing boats and varied species of fish.
Tromsø is situated at approximately 70 degrees north and because of this it should normally have a cold climate with icy fjords most of the year, but fortunately that’s not the case.
The gulf current brings a temperate water all the way from the Mexico Gulf and run upwards the Norwegian coastline. During the winter months the temperature in the sea is mostly around 4 degrees Celsius.
Here at the border to the Arctic Sea that reaches all the way to the North Pole, varied species of fish seems to thrive and has because of this for centuries been an important source of food as well as an important income source for the locals.
History shows that organized fishing and export of cod goes all the way back to
the Viking ages around the 10th century. Dry cod – dryfish – was an
important export item.
There’s rich fishing grounds just outside of Tromsø where the winter cod migrate from the Barents Sea to spawn, and stay there from the end of December to the middle of April every year. Throughout the rest of the year you’ll find large instances of coastal cod which provides the basis for exciting sport fishing.
There’s open water all year along the coastline, and there’s only a few fjord areas during the winter months where you’ll find frozen water created by the freshwater running out from the rivers.
Because of this, deep sea fishing is possible most of the year, and this is the exact environment that cod and other species thrives in. It’s not unlikely to catch big fish between 15 and 30 kilograms in our area, and the largest ever caught onboard the M/V “BigFisher” was 37 kilograms.
Arctic Safari can offer you and your friends the most exclusive hunt for cod with a local guide in the area. A unique and grand experience in the northern Norwegian nature is guaranteed.
Come onboard the M/V “BigFisher II”, our 14,75 meters long Striker completely from aluminum sport fishing boat. Captain Morten, an experience sports fisherman when it comes to cod, halibut and other species, will use his local knowledge to bring you to the best spots for cod fishing in the area.
We offer both day trips and accommodation onboard the M/V BigFisher II which has two-person cabins. Maximum 4 people when it comes to accommodation – this to
